Sunstone Supports Nevada Earth Science Education Workshops

Empowering Nevada Teachers and Inspiring the Next Generation of Scientists

NVMA Workshop info

At Sunstone, we love supporting the communities that drive Nevada’s resource economy. A key part of that commitment is supporting STEM education initiatives that prepare the next generation for careers in fields like geology, environmental science, GIS, engineering and mining.

We are proud to celebrate our Senior GIS Consultant, Rachel Micander, as she participates in the Nevada Earth Science Education Workshops, hosted by the Nevada Mining Association (NvMA). This June, Rachel will reach a significant milestone, her 30th workshop since she began volunteering in 2010.

About the Nevada Earth Science Education Workshops

These free, hands-on workshops are open to all Nevada K-12 teachers and are held twice annually:

  • Northern Nevada Workshop – June 2026 at the UNR Lake Tahoe campus (second year in a row)
  • Southern Nevada Workshop – March during Clark County spring break (Las Vegas area)

Teachers who complete the two-day program earn continuing education credits toward license renewal and receive valuable classroom resources, including:

  • Rock and mineral kits featuring common Nevada specimens
  • Mineral test kits and professional identification guides
  • Practical knowledge on Nevada’s unique geology, mining importance, geothermal energy, and renewable resources

Workshop Structure

  • Day 1: Classroom sessions with industry professionals, geologists, academics, and government experts covering rocks and minerals, plate tectonics, and geologic formation environments.
  • Day 2: Field experiences at active mine sites, geothermal plants, geoscience museums, state parks, and aggregate operations.

Rachel’s Ongoing Impact

As a dedicated Senior GIS Consultant at Sunstone, Rachel brings real-world expertise to the classroom. She will lead sessions on rocks and minerals, plate tectonics, and geologic formation environments during the 2026 Northern Nevada workshop.

Her long-term involvement aligns perfectly with Sunstone’s values of community engagement and workforce development. By equipping teachers with accurate, engaging content, Rachel helps inspire students to explore rewarding careers in Nevada mining, environmental consulting, and STEM fields.

Why These Workshops Matter for Nevada’s Future

Nevada is a national leader in gold, silver, copper, and geothermal production. Programs like the NvMA Earth Science Workshops play a vital role in building public understanding and developing the skilled workforce needed for future resource development.
