Banner Mill and Summit Mine – Pyramid Peak Mining, LLC, New Mexico

Banner Mill and Summit Mine
Pyramid Peak Mining, LLC, New Mexico

Project Background

Pyramid Peak Mining, LLC owned the Banner Mill and Summit Mine located in Hidalgo County and Grant County and New Mexico. Exploration and mining have occurred in the area since the late 1800’s and there are current workings including portals, material piles, and ancillary facilities at the Summit Mine. The Banner Mill consists of a dam and reservoir, and a tailings storage facility. During Pyramid Peak’s ownership, the mill and mine were unstaffed in care and maintenance status and Sunstone took over all environmental responsibilities.

Banner Mill Operations and Maintenance Manual & Emergency Action Plan Renewal

The Banner Mill O&M and EAP required renewal applications be submitted in 2021 for the tailings dam. Sunstone contracted with an engineer to update the plans; we provided technical comments and researched site information for the plans. We managed the project and, as the registered owner, completed a tabletop exercise with the engineer to simulate an emergency situation. The outcome of this project created succinct and current plans for Banner Mill to utilize during daily operation and in case of an upset.
